Illuminated Colours
This is a follow on from my previous blog on Reflections. After I’d written that and looked at the images I’d included, it sparked another train of thought about a technique I’ve been using recently. I’ve called this technique Colour Selection in the absence of any knowledge I have of a more widely known name. I had experimented with this technique as a trial until I saw an artist using it in some artworks shown by the HENI Gallery. If you’d like to see that artist’s work click here to link to HENI’s Instagram post. The artist is Felipe Posada and the pieces are from his ‘The Edge of Reality’ series.
This encouraged me to go back to the technique and work on something I could post on Instagram.
In the comments on my first post (Tower Bridge), someone asked "What are the lines for?" and I replied so that we can see familiar things in a new way. Then I thought, that’s not a very deep answer to what is a very good question, and dug a bit deeper into my thoughts. Firstly, if you've seen my images you'll know that I love colour. I like creating this technique because it allows me to look at the colours and select the ones that are meaningful to me. I enjoy doing this and I hope that you can also enjoy looking at it. Tracing each colour to its source and thinking about that object in a closer way than you might have, had you just scanned the image quickly. I find it to be quite a meditative process creating these.
More importantly, I realised, after writing the Reflections blog, that these colour illuminations are very, very similar to reflections of lights on water, which are one of my favourite things to photograph. If you’ve looked at a light (say a street lamp) and its reflection, you’ll see that the one original spot of light is extended into a beautiful, long stretch of shimmering light on water. An illumination! That’s another facet of my enjoyment in creating and looking at these.
So, today I’ve collated a little gallery of 6 of these pieces, which I hope you’ll enjoy.
The following images are all mine. You can click on any picture to see it full size in a light box.
